Exposed Aggregate Concrete

Premium decorative stone finishes that combine natural beauty with lasting durability.

Natural Stone Aesthetics, Concrete Strength

Exposed aggregate is one of the most popular decorative concrete finishes in South East Queensland, and for good reason. By washing or chemically retarding the surface mortar to reveal the natural stone beneath, you get a textured, slip-resistant finish that looks stunning on driveways, pathways, pool surrounds and alfresco entertaining areas. Reocrete supplies purpose-designed exposed aggregate mixes through Cossacred, giving Brisbane builders and homeowners access to a wide palette of stone colours and sizes.

Unlike plain grey concrete, exposed aggregate transforms functional hardscaping into an architectural feature. The finish is achieved by using decorative aggregates — carefully graded natural stones — that are mixed into the concrete at the batch plant. After placement, the surface paste is removed to expose the stone, creating a finish that is both beautiful and extremely hard-wearing.

Decorative Stone Options

We offer a curated range of aggregate blends sourced from quarries across Queensland and New South Wales. Popular options include:

  • Autumn Gold — warm honey and amber tones that complement timber cladding and sandstone features.
  • River Pebble — smooth, rounded stones in soft greys and creams for a classic coastal look.
  • Charcoal Basalt — deep charcoal and slate tones ideal for contemporary homes and commercial facades.
  • Hinterland Blend — earthy reds and browns inspired by the rich soils of the Brisbane hinterland.
  • White Quartz — bright, reflective stones that lighten shaded areas and pair well with rendered walls.

Each blend is available in 7 mm and 10 mm aggregate sizes, allowing your concreter to match the finish grain to the project scale. Smaller stones produce a finer, more detailed texture, while larger aggregates create a bolder, more rustic appearance.

Applications

Exposed aggregate concrete is incredibly versatile. The most common residential applications include:

  • Driveways — a durable, low-maintenance surface that adds street appeal and handles daily vehicle traffic without cracking or staining.
  • Pathways and garden edges — the textured surface provides excellent grip in wet conditions, making it safer than smooth-finished concrete or pavers.
  • Pool surrounds — the natural slip resistance of exposed stone is ideal around swimming pools, spas and water features.
  • Patios and entertaining areas — exposed aggregate complements outdoor kitchens, fire pits and timber decking, creating a cohesive outdoor living space.

The Exposure Process

There are two primary methods for achieving an exposed finish. The first is water-wash, where the surface is hosed and broomed within a few hours of placement to remove the top layer of cement paste. The second is chemical retarder, where a surface-applied retarder slows the set of the top 2–3 mm of paste so it can be pressure-washed away the following day. Your concreter will choose the method best suited to the weather conditions, job size and desired depth of exposure.

Getting the timing right is critical. Expose too early and the stones dislodge; leave it too late and the paste sets hard, making a clean reveal difficult. Our technical staff can advise on retarder selection and curing times based on seasonal temperatures in the Brisbane region.

Maintenance Tips

Exposed aggregate is inherently low-maintenance, but a few simple steps will keep it looking its best for decades:

  • Sweep or blow loose debris regularly to prevent organic staining.
  • Pressure-wash annually at a moderate setting (no higher than 2,500 psi) to remove built-up grime.
  • Reapply a quality acrylic or polyurethane sealer every three to five years to restore the colour depth and protect against oil and tyre marks.
  • Address any hairline cracks promptly to prevent moisture ingress and weed growth.

Colour & Sealer Combinations

Sealers come in matte, satin and gloss finishes. A gloss sealer intensifies the stone colour and gives a wet-look sheen that suits modern homes, while a matte sealer preserves the natural, understated character of the stone. We can supply sample panels so you can compare sealer finishes before committing to a full pour.
