Polished Concrete Floors

Sleek, hard-wearing interior floors that look better with age.

Modern Floors That Perform as Good as They Look

Polished concrete has become one of the most sought-after flooring options in Australia. Homeowners love its clean, minimalist aesthetic; commercial operators value its durability and virtually zero maintenance requirements. Reocrete supplies the high-quality base concrete through Cossacred that makes a superior polished floor possible, working with specialist grind-and-polish contractors throughout South East Queensland to deliver a seamless result from slab to shine.

A polished concrete floor starts life as a standard or purpose-designed concrete slab. Once the slab has cured, it is progressively ground with diamond-impregnated pads, moving from coarse grits to ultra-fine grits until the desired level of sheen is achieved. The process densifies the surface, closing the pore structure and creating a finish that repels moisture, resists staining and reflects natural light beautifully.

The Grind-and-Seal Process

There are two broad systems for polished concrete, and the right choice depends on the desired look and performance level:

  • Mechanically polished concrete — the slab is ground through multiple diamond-grit stages (typically 30 grit up to 3,000 grit). A lithium-silicate densifier is applied midway to harden the surface. The result is a true stone-like polish that does not rely on a topical coating and will not peel or delaminate.
  • Grind and seal — the slab is ground to a 100–200 grit profile, then coated with a clear polyurethane or epoxy sealer. This is a faster, more cost-effective option that still delivers an attractive satin or gloss finish, though it will require periodic recoating.

Residential Applications

In homes, polished concrete is commonly used for open-plan living areas, kitchens, hallways and rumpus rooms. Its thermal mass absorbs and slowly releases heat, helping to regulate indoor temperatures in Queensland's subtropical climate. Paired with underfloor heating in cooler months, a polished slab becomes a radiant heat source that warms the entire room evenly without visible radiators or ductwork.

Polished floors are also an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. Unlike carpet, they harbour no dust mites, pet dander or mould spores, and a quick mop is all that is needed to keep them hygienic.

Commercial Applications

Polished concrete is the floor of choice for warehouses, showrooms, retail stores, restaurants and office foyers across Brisbane. Its key commercial advantages include:

  • Withstands forklift and pallet-jack traffic without gouging or cracking.
  • Resists chemical spills, oil stains and tyre marks common in industrial environments.
  • Reflective surface reduces the need for artificial lighting, cutting energy costs.
  • Lifespan measured in decades, not years — dramatically lower lifecycle cost than vinyl, carpet or ceramic tile.

Benefits Over Tiles and Timber

When comparing flooring options, polished concrete consistently outperforms traditional materials in several important areas:

  • Durability — no grout lines to crack, no boards to warp, no tiles to chip. A properly maintained polished floor will outlast the building itself.
  • Maintenance — daily dust-mopping and occasional damp-mopping are the only ongoing requirements. No waxing, stripping or re-grouting.
  • Cost — while the upfront cost is comparable to mid-range tiles, the near-zero maintenance expense makes polished concrete significantly cheaper over a 20-year period.
  • Sustainability — polished concrete uses the structural slab as the finished floor, eliminating the need for additional flooring materials, adhesives and underlays.

Specifying the Right Slab

Not every concrete slab is suitable for polishing. For the best result, we recommend a minimum 32 MPa mix with 10 mm aggregate and a slump of 80 mm. The aggregate type and colour will influence the final appearance once exposed by grinding, so discuss your aesthetic goals with our team when ordering. We can also add integral oxide colour to the mix for a tinted polished finish that is completely unique.
